Sony launches the FX5: 3:2 Open Gate and internal X-OCN RAW in the Cinema Line
A new stacked 5K sensor, 3 base ISOs with Dual Gain, False Color and 32-bit float audio. VENICE technology in a body the size of an FX3.

Sony launched the FX5 today, its new full-frame cinema camera — and for the first time the arsenal that was exclusive to VENICE and BURANO comes down to the mid Cinema Line. If you shoot fiction or documentary, this changes your buying plan.
The facts
- A new full-frame 5K Exmor RS sensor, back-illuminated and fully stacked (~16.6 MP, 4992×3328), with the BIONZ XR2 processor and built-in AI. It doesn’t shoot stills: cinema and video, period
- 3:2 Open Gate and internal 16-bit linear X-OCN LT RAW — VENICE’s digital negative, in light files. XAVC S-I/HS up to 240 fps
- 3 base ISOs (800, 4000, 12800) with the same dynamic range, Dual Gain at base 800, and monitoring with waveform, vectorscope and False Color. No internal NDs
- Removable DCI-P3 OLED viewfinder, BURANO-style menu with Big 6, 32-bit float audio at 96 kHz with the new XLR-H2 top handle, active cooling and ~30% longer-lasting batteries
LATAM read
16-bit RAW without buying a new RAID, and three native sensitivities to shoot at night without a truck of lights: this camera is aimed straight at our region’s independent and documentary sets — and at becoming the affordable rental A-cam that was missing between the FX3 and the big bodies.
My personal opinion — Daniel Blanco A.M.C.
I’ve been using it for a while: it doesn’t feel like an updated FX — it feels like a small BURANO or VENICE. The full breakdown, section by section, is in my FX5 hands-on — and right below, episode 1 of the 16-video series — a new one every week.
Coming very soon to Downloads: X-OCN LT camera clips and Resolve/Premiere projects so you can try the footage yourself — as soon as the post apps add support for this version of the codec (a matter of a week).
