Rediscovering Photography with Vintage Lenses in Japan

On our latest trip to Japan, we decided to experiment with photography in a unique way: leaving behind our heavy bags full of zooms and modern lenses to dive into the world of vintage glass. This experience wasn’t just a journey through different Japanese cities — it was also a trip through time and the history of photography. Join us on this adventure and discover the gems we found. Don’t forget to follow us on YouTube to see more of our experience, and on Spotify for additional stories.

A relics shop in Tokyo:

  • In the middle of the most expensive avenue in Tokyo, among clothing and jewelry stores, we found a shop full of vintage cameras and lenses. It was like discovering hidden treasure in the heart of the city.

  • Photographic culture in Japan: we were struck by how rooted photography is in Japanese culture, Japan being the birthplace of many legendary photography companies.

Maintenance and quality of the old lenses:

  • Perfect state of preservation: despite being pieces from the ’60s and ’80s, the lenses and cameras we found were in impeccable, almost-new condition.

  • Lens collection: we took home a variety of lenses, from 8mm to 1000mm, which we used to capture unique images across the cities of Japan.

Photographic experience with vintage lenses:

  • Diversity in capturing images: each lens gave us a different perspective, letting us explore different styles and photographic techniques.

  • Rediscovering the art of photography: using these lenses let us appreciate the roots of photography and how old techniques and styles can enrich our modern images.

Conclusion: our trip to Japan with vintage lenses was more than a photographic adventure — it was an immersion in the history and culture of photography. These lenses gave us a new perspective on how to capture images and the importance of preserving and valuing the photographic technology of decades past.
