Aputure 2024: innovation in lighting:

  • LED lighting ecosystem: Aputure has set an industry standard, with products other brands try to replicate.

  • Aputure vs Amaran line: while the Aputure line is built with more rugged materials and advanced functions for DMX controllers, Amaran offers a more affordable alternative with similar light quality — ideal for content creators and emerging filmmakers.

Hands-on experimentation: during one of our in-person cinematography workshops, we used gear like the Sony 2, the Arri Alexa Mini LF and the RED V-Raptor 8K. We also ran an experiment with expired 16mm film to understand the importance of light quality and light manipulation.

Light quality and lighting schemes:

  • Booklight and diffusers: we implemented techniques like using a booklight and large-surface diffusers to create soft, diffuse lighting.

  • 1200D with direct diffuser: we used the 1200D to provide direct diffuse lighting, highlighting its power and versatility across different lighting setups.

Dual ISO and exposure options: the FX30, with its Dual ISO of 800 and 2,500, offers flexibility across various lighting conditions, which we demonstrated during the workshop with practical examples.

Features and menus: despite its compact size and accessible cost, the FX30 doesn’t skimp on features, sharing many of the characteristics of higher-end cameras in Sony’s Cinema Line.

Conclusions and reflections: the Sony FX30 stands out as a valuable tool for anyone starting in professional film and video, offering high-level features at a more accessible cost.
